Bio

Christophe Rigaud obtained a double European PhD in Computer Science from the University of La Rochelle and the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2014. Previously, he obtained an engineering degree in Automatic Control and Computer Engineering and a research master's degree in Mathematics and Applications from the University of Angers engineering school, a bachelor's degree from the IUT in Salon de Provence in 2008 and a BTS in design and production of automated systems in Carpentras (Vaucluse, France) in 2005.

During his thesis, he worked at the Computer Science, Image and Interaction Laboratory (L3i) at the University of La Rochelle, under the supervision of Jean-Christophe Burie and Jean-Marc Ogier, and at the Computer Vision Centre (CVC) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, under the supervision of Dimosthenis Karatzas. During his PhD period, he has spent several research periods in Japan at Osaka Prefectural University, in the intelligent media processing group.

His research interest is the automatic analysis of comics/manga images by computer, in which he extracts as much information as possible to describe the content of the images, i.e. the position and characteristics of the panels, speech bubbles, text and characters. All this information forms a knowledge base that can be queried using key words, for example, to find a particular panel, dialogue or sequence of actions from a large number of digitized or digital-born albums. Other applications are also envisaged, such as case-by-case reading on mobile devices, translation assistance, accessibility and conversion into audio books.

Projects

SAIL common laboratory

L3i, the Computer Science Image Interaction Laboratory at La Rochelle University, and Actialuna/Geocomics SAS have joined forces to create the Sequential Art Image Laboratory ("S.A.I.L."), in order to carry out, via this joint laboratory, a joint innovation programe focusing on issues relating to the use and development of digital comics.

Since 2014, part of the research work carried out by L3i's 'eBDtheque' team has been integrated into the services offered by the partner company working on the automatic analysis of comics. The company and L3i subsequently unified by creating a joint laboratory to strengthen their synergies.

Trivia about me

After a year as a temporary teaching and research associate and several years as a post-doctoral research engineer at L3i and the University's computer science department, Christophe joined a partner company at the end of 2021 as an artificial intelligence architect. His role will be to strengthen the production chain's comics analysis algorithms, integrate the laboratory's research work as soon as it produces industrial level results, supply annotated data to the laboratory and conduct research on strategic subjects. At the end of 2023, the company have be acquired by a digital book distribution group, which should enable it to transfer the expertise it has acquired in comics to digital books in general.
